CE Course Description

This course provides social workers, marriage and family therapists, and counselors with a comprehensive exploration of cultural competence in mental health practice. Spanning diverse topics—including race and ethnicity, religion and spirituality, gender and sexual identity, and the impacts of stigma and discrimination—participants will gain practical tools for engaging clients with respect, compassion, and ethical integrity. Through research, case vignettes, and applied strategies, the course emphasizes cultural humility and responsiveness while addressing professional codes, legal requirements, and best practices. Learners will strengthen their ability to provide inclusive, client-centered care across varied cultural and community contexts.

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Define cultural competence and cultural humility and articulate their importance in clinical practice.
  • Identify personal cultural values and biases and describe how these shape therapeutic relationships.
